Do you have Sensitive Scalp?

WHAT IS SENSITIVE SCALP?

A sensitive scalp is a scalp that feels itchy and irritated. Factors like pollution, stress or even alkaline products that are too harsh can cause the scalp to become increasingly sensitive.

WHAT CAUSES SENSITIVE SCALP?

  • Skin conditions like atopic dermatitis (a skin condition that causes redness), fungal infection, psoriasis or eczema (other skin disorders)
  • Pollution and stress: Pollution contains harmful elements, that coats the hair and creates a dull film over it. Stress can cause damage to the scalp barrier. The following common elements can also cause scalp sensitivity:
    • An imbalanced diet
    • Frequent styling and blow drying
    • Wearing motorcycle helmets for long period of time
    • Extensive exposure to chlorinated water and sunrays

SHAMPOO USED IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS THAT CAUSES SCALP SENSITIVITY

Aggressive cleansers or surfactants present in many shampoos can attack the natural acidity of your scalp (a protective barrier that protects your skin). This barrier gets damaged leading to scalp dryness and irritation. Alkaline shampoos (with pH > 5.5) disrupt the natural protective barrier of your scalp.

HAIR CARE TIPS FOR MANAGING SENSITIVE SCALP

Use a gentle shampoo for sensitive scalp, which contains a sugar-based tenside agent and an active moisturizing compound for gentle cleansing action to protect and stabilize the hair structure and health of the scalp. Always use a shampoo with a pH value of 5.5 for prevention of hair and scalp dehydration and strengthening of the physiological acid mantle. The other good daily hair care routines to adopt are:

  • Eat healthy and well-balanced meals
  • Learn how to manage your stress
  • Regularly massage your scalp to stimulate blood circulation
  • Do not keep your hair pulled back tightly
  • Wear a hat or scarf in the sun to protect your hair

Use shampoos (with pH 5.5) that do not contain sulfates / parabens / harsh chemicals

Sulfates are chemicals that make shampoos lather up. Parabens are preservatives that cause irritation and eye problems after prolonged use. Alkaline shampoos disrupt the scalp (protection barrier), leading to moisture loss and penetration of irritants leading to hair and scalp damage. Shampoos with pH 5.5 strengthen the scalp’s protective barrier. Aim to shampoo your hair at most every other day or twice a week.

Let your hair dry naturally

After you get out of the shower:

  • Wrap your hair in a cotton T-Shirt. Towels are made of fabric that is very rough and damaging to your hair, causing frizziness and split ends
  • Avoid brushing hair while wet. It makes the hair brittle and weak
  • Use a wide tooth comb to brush out tangles while hair is wet

Don’t brush your hair too much

Brushing your hair stimulates the hair roots which promotes growth, but brushing too often will cause damage to your hair strands that results in frizz and split ends. Regular combing, preferably twice a day, is very important.

Trim your hair regularly

The best way to get rid of split ends is to regularly trim your hair. Many women with perfect hair never have split ends because they make it a priority to get their hair trimmed or trim it themselves, every 2 months.

Eat healthy

Give your hair the right amount of vitamins. Eat balanced diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Make sure you get plenty of vitamin C, it strengthens hair. In addition, iron helps transport oxygen to blood vessels, zinc grows and repairs tissue and omega-3-fatty acids grow healthy hair.
